These four have belonged together for eight hundred years. Plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo — the Four Gentlemen of East Asian ink painting. One for each season, and one for each virtue a scholar was meant to hold.

Why a set instead of one

Hung in a row they read as a single piece, and the wall stops looking like a wall with something on it. Plum flowers on bare wood while the snow is still down. Orchid keeps its scent where no one is looking. Chrysanthemum opens after everything else has closed. Bamboo bends to the storm and does not break.

On the wall
